Travnik sits in a narrow valley with mountains on both sides, which is why the light changes so completely between morning and late afternoon. For two hundred years this was where the viziers governed Bosnia, and the town still looks it — a fortress on the ridge, two clock towers, and a mosque with paintings on the outside walls that you will not find anywhere else in the country.
Below the old town the Plava Voda comes straight out of the rock, cold enough in August to hurt your hand, with grill houses along both banks that have not changed their menu in forty years. Above it all is Vlašić — pasture in summer, and the cheese those flocks produce is on every table in Bosnia. In winter the same mountain fills with skiers.
We are not a tour company. This site is run from Travnik, the guides are people we know, and what you pay goes to them rather than to an agency three countries away. Tell us what you are interested in and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth your day.

There is no agency in the middle here. travnik.com is run from Travnik by people who were born in this valley and still live in it, and those same people are the ones who meet you. Every tour is private — your party and your guide, nobody else. No coach, no numbered badge, no group of forty being counted back onto a bus.
We do not treat visitors as customers. You will be taken into places that are not on any itinerary, introduced to people by name, and told the truth about what is worth your time and what is not. If somewhere is closed, or the weather has ruined the view, we will say so and take you somewhere better. People who come once tend to write to us afterwards, and a fair number come back.

Someone who lives here, with you all day
Two things, and the second is the one that matters. First, we book everything — the restaurant that does not answer email, the room, the car, the mountain hut that wants ringing the night before. Second, and this is the part you cannot get anywhere else, we stay with you. All day, every day of your visit if you want it.
That means being walked into places you would never push the door of on your own — the grill house down the side street with no sign in English, the kafana where the old men play cards, the family who make the cheese. We do the introductions and we break the ice, because a stranger walking in alone gets a polite table by the window and a local walking in with you gets you the good one, and the owner comes over.
You get told the truth about where to eat, not the three places on the square that survive on people passing through. Where the locals actually go in the evening, which café has the terrace worth sitting on, where to be on a Friday night and where not to bother. And when something goes wrong at nine on a Sunday, you have somebody to ring who is ten minutes away.

Something from the market that no shop sells — the honey, a copper pot, cheese straight off the mountain — bought properly from the man who made it, at what a local pays, in a conversation you could not have had on your own. If you would rather just sit with locals over coffee for an afternoon and hear about the place, that is a real thing to ask for and we will arrange it.

The same for a whole stay.
