How do I get to Travnik?
Travnik sits on the M5 highway between Sarajevo and Zenica, roughly 90 km from Sarajevo airport. Expect an hour and a half by car, or a little over two by bus. Regular buses run daily from Sarajevo, Zenica and Mostar directly to the station in the centre of town.
What is Travnik known for?
Travnik was the seat of the Ottoman viziers who governed Bosnia between 1699 and 1850. That history left behind a stone fortress, a decorated mosque and a line of vizier tombs. Ivo Andrić, awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1961, was born here. Directly behind the town rises Vlašić, a 1,933 m mountain massif famous for winter skiing and its salted sheep cheese.
When is the best time to visit?
May through September brings warm weather for exploring the old town, climbing to the fortress and sitting by Plava Voda. December to March brings winter snow on Vlašić. For lower prices and quieter streets, come during the shoulder months of April and October.
What should I eat in Travnik?
Order ćevapi, which locals take very seriously, along with Vlašić cheese—a salty sheep cheese aged in brine that bears the name of the mountain above town. Finish with traditional Bosnian coffee, poured from a copper džezva alongside a sugar cube and rahat lokum.
Is Travnik expensive?
No. Bosnia and Herzegovina uses the convertible mark, fixed to the euro at 1.96 KM to €1, and prices here remain lower than in Sarajevo or Mostar. A coffee costs 2–3 KM, a plate of ćevapi runs 8–12 KM, and a standard double room outside the ski season costs 60–120 KM.
